Colton Wiles, owner of SoftwareCW, has spent more than 15 years in software retail. He began selling CAD software while still in high school and has since worked through the industry’s transition from boxed products to digital downloads.
In the Q&A below, Wiles discusses the risks that have accompanied that transition, the warning signs buyers should recognize, and the checks businesses should complete before purchasing or installing software.
Tell us about your background and what led you to software retail?
I sort of fell into software retail. In high school, I took a lot of computer-aided drafting classes and found that I was pretty good at it. I competed at the regional, state, and national levels, where some sponsoring brands awarded me CAD software.
I began selling those copies on eBay. By tenth grade, I would leave school at 3:10 p.m. and return calls from established companies while selling tens of thousands of dollars’ worth of software.
I had no related degree, so I taught myself business and e-commerce as I went. That unconventional beginning eventually became a long-term career for me in the software industry.
You started selling CAD software while you were still in high school. How did that unconventional beginning shape the way you think about trust and responsibility in software retail?
When you’re that young and sort of still forming your ideas about the world and, more specifically, about business, there’s a lot to learn. Some lessons are easy, but others are tough. But if you’re serious, it teaches you to not only get people to trust you with their money, but also to deliver the product or service to them quickly and as expected, if not better.
Having been in the industry for over 15 years means you’ve worked through the transitions from boxed software to digital downloads. How has that shift changed the cybersecurity risks facing software buyers today?
Yes, in the beginning, it was a lot of boxed software sold through Amazon, Newegg, Walmart, eBay, and other smaller marketplaces. Digital delivery removed the issues to do with warehousing and shipping that boxed software came with, but it also moved more of the trust online.
Now the buyer has to judge the seller, the license terms, the download path, and the email delivering the order. Today, faster and easier delivery also makes buyers more vulnerable, especially if they’re getting software from questionable sources.
What should buyers verify before relying on a retailer’s claim that the software is authorized and safe to download?
Start with whether the retailer can explain where the product came from, what the buyer is purchasing, and how the license may be used. It sounds basic, but most counterfeit software today is really convincing.
A polished product page is just not enough. Buyers should look for accurate product details, clear license restrictions, a defined delivery method, and an order record they can retain. If a software publisher provides an official list of authorized resellers, confirm that the seller appears on it. Many of these checks on their own do not guarantee legitimacy, so consider all the available evidence together.
Does a working product key or successful activation prove that software is genuine and safe?
No. A working key tells you the key was accepted for that product or device at that time. It does not tell you who supplied the installer, whether the seller had the right to distribute it, or whether the download was changed before it reached you.
Buyers should confirm the product edition, license limits, seller, and delivery source. They should also keep the record and use the publisher’s normal update process. I would never use an activation as the only test.
How can software retailers make software purchases simple, streamlined, and quick without weakening the checks that protect customers and their systems?
Beyond simply making the site look professional, these important checks should be built into the process. That means that you should provide accurate product information, clear licensing, a known download route, and an order record. Integrate secure payment methods and scan digital keys for malware.
After more than 15 years of software retail, what’s the most important lesson you would give businesses trying to strengthen cybersecurity through better software-purchasing practices?
Always think about software purchases as risk management decisions from the perspective of the buyer, not just business transactions. A risk management approach can involve anything from independent audits like SOC 2 Type II or ISO 27001 compliance to requiring fast security patches and clear end-of-life timelines. Having these strict requirements for the software you list will protect your customers, thereby earning you more trust as you optimize other aspects of your business.
