Zigbee Opens Suzi Certification Program for Long-Range IoT

0
The Connectivity Standards Alliance has opened its Product Certification Program for Zigbee sub-GHz, also known as Suzi, following the introduction of Zigbee 4.0. The certification program is designed to help manufacturers bring standardized long-range, low-power IoT products to market while maintaining interoperability across the established Zigbee ecosystem.

Extending Zigbee Beyond Boundaries

Zigbee has long been the foundation of reliable, secure, and low-power mesh networking. With the addition of Suzi, the technology evolves into a platform designed for larger, more complex, and more demanding IoT deployments.

At the heart of this evolution is Suzi, a sub-GHz extension that expands Zigbee’s capabilities beyond the traditional 2.4 GHz band, unlocking:

  • Longer range and better wall penetration
  • Improved resilience in dense or challenging RF environments
  • Lower interference and more reliable communication

Operating in sub-GHz frequency bands (such as 800 MHz in Europe and 900 MHz in North America), Suzi enables connectivity across buildings, campuses, outdoor spaces, and industrial environments where traditional solutions fall short.

Built on the proven Zigbee network layer, Suzi combines mesh networking, low power consumption, and multi-vendor interoperability, delivering robust performance across residential, commercial, and industrial use cases.

Reliable Mesh Networking At a New Scale

Suzi is not just about range; it’s about reliability at scale.

By extending Zigbee’s mesh architecture into sub-GHz frequencies, Suzi enables:

  • Large-scale mesh networks with improved stability and message delivery
  • Consistent performance across complex environments (multi-floor buildings, outdoor installations, industrial sites)
  • Reduced infrastructure requirements, thanks to the need for fewer repeaters

In combination with Zigbee 4.0’s enhancements in security, onboarding, and lifecycle management, Suzi helps simplify deployment while strengthening network performance and resilience.

Enabling a New Generation of Certified Products

The launch of the Suzi Product Certification Program opens the door for manufacturers to bring interoperable Zigbee Sub-GHz devices to market with confidence.

Certification ensures that products:

  • Meet strict interoperability requirements across vendors
  • Adhere to robust security standards aligned with global best practices
  • Deliver consistent, reliable performance in real-world deployments

This program builds on the Alliance’s proven certification framework, which has supported a global ecosystem of billions of Zigbee devices. By certifying Suzi-enabled products, manufacturers can accelerate time-to-market while ensuring compatibility within a trusted, standards-based ecosystem.

Designed to Complement Existing Zigbee Networks

Suzi is not a replacement for Zigbee’s 2.4 GHz operation; it is an extension.

The technology is designed to work alongside existing Zigbee networks, allowing developers and operators to choose the right frequency band based on deployment needs. This dual-band flexibility enables optimized network design without sacrificing interoperability or requiring a complete system overhaul.

A key enabler of this flexibility is Zigbee’s support for bridge devices operating across both 2.4 GHz and sub-GHz radios.

These bridges allow:

  • Seamless communication between existing and extended-range networks
  • Gradual expansion of existing deployments
  • Preservation of compatibility with already installed Zigbee devices

For manufacturers, this approach significantly lowers the barrier to adoption. Devices that already support Sub-GHz radios can enable Suzi functionality without extensive hardware redesign, making it easier to expand capabilities while protecting prior investments.

Building the Future of IoT Connectivity

Zigbee 4.0 and Suzi together represent a major step forward in the evolution of IoT connectivity, combining:

  • Enhanced security and simplified commissioning
  • Backward compatibility with existing Zigbee deployments
  • Extended range through sub-GHz innovation

This unified approach allows developers and manufacturers to build solutions capable of scaling from the smart home to the smart city without compromising on reliability or interoperability.
